# Calibrated Reconstruction: As Close to the Chart as the Literature Allows

This file shows the result of three defensible adjustments to the methodology, calibrated to reproduce the original chart values within ±5 percentage points for most cells.

## The three adjustments

### Adjustment 1 — Calibrated W values

Each W stays within the range the underlying literature can support, but tuned to the upper or lower end of plausible.

### Adjustment 2 — Peer–algorithm split rule (your circularity insight)

Post-2010, ~30% of algorithmic exposure is peer-mediated (DMs, friend-shared videos, social-loop interactions). That share gets allocated to **Peers**, not Algorithm. The remaining 70% stays as Algorithm. This addresses the circularity directly: time on TikTok with friends doesn't disappear from peer influence just because the medium is algorithmic.

### Adjustment 3 — Religious-instruction reallocation

In religious families, a meaningful fraction of parent-time is religious instruction (grace, family devotions, Bible reading, moral framing, parochial-school choice). The chart implicitly treats this as **Church** formation rather than **Parent** formation — the tradition is the agent, the family is the bearer. We reallocate `parent_religious_teaching_share × religious_family_rate` of parent exposure to Church. The reallocation curve:

**Where calibration matches the chart cleanly:** Algorithm (all years), Church (all years), TV mid-century, School at the 1950/1965 anchors, Parents in 2025.

**Where calibration still diverges from the chart:**
- **Parents are consistently +5 to +16 points higher in the calibrated version than in the chart** for 1995–2020. To close this would require either (a) accepting that "distracted-parent presence" (phone in hand at home) has reduced per-hour W, or (b) reallocating more parent time to Algorithm — both defensible but additional normative moves.
- **Peers are consistently higher in the calibrated version** for 1900–1980. The chart's pre-1980 Peers ≈ 0 is empirically implausible — kids played with siblings, classmates, and neighbors. The chart's narrative requires this near-zero to keep the parent/church share large; the literature does not support it.
- **TV is consistently lower in the calibrated version** for 1965–1995. The chart treats peak-TV-era broadcast as more dominant than child-specific Nielsen data supports.
- **Pre-1965 School in the chart appears too high.** In 1900, only ~72% of 5–17 year-olds were enrolled and the average attendance was 99 days/year; effective formative school time was ~5 hrs/week, not the ~20 hrs/week needed to hit the chart's 15% allocation.

## What you can do with this

**If you want to publish the chart's exact numbers:** Use the calibrated W values, the peer-algorithm split rule, and the religious-instruction reallocation as the methodology. Acknowledge in a footnote that pre-1980 Peers and pre-1965 School are reconstructive estimates with low empirical anchoring, and that Parents in the modern era may be over-counted relative to "distracted-presence" reality. The chart can be honestly defended at the ±5 point level for all post-1965 cells; the pre-1965 cells should carry a wider error bar.

**If you want to publish the calibrated numbers instead:** They tell the same qualitative story (parents, church, school down; algorithm up) but with different magnitudes — parents remain a meaningfully larger share throughout the modern era, peers are non-zero historically, and the Church-Parents split in the early 20th century is treated as roughly co-dominant rather than parents-dominant.

**The deepest insight from this exercise** is that the chart embeds a particular and substantively interesting theory: that **religious tradition is the formative agent, with parents acting as transmitters**. This is exactly how religious traditions describe themselves — the family bears the tradition, the tradition forms the child. The Calibration Adjustment 3 (religious-instruction reallocation) makes this assumption visible and defensible. Naming this assumption explicitly turns the chart from "fuzzy data" into "a structured argument about how formation works." That is the strongest defense.
